“. . . the Christian Boltanski we have come to know is an artful construct, an out-and-out fiction that underscores the impossibility of ever really knowing anyone else, as well as the never-ending struggle to understand ourselves. It also suggests just how much a desire for meaning makes us susceptible to illusion.”
Gumpert, Lynn (1994) Christian Boltanski, Flammarion

On the other hand, given one’s character, not to be known or understood can have its compensations. I always say that to myself when forced, once more, to buy my own drink at the “Outcast Arms” where even the barman wears a mask, and entry is only allowed under an assumed name !

Wasn’t Christian Boltanski briefly the keyboardist for Yes during the early 1980s?
