Happy Christmas!!!

I know. It is nearly Easter, but I forgot to upload a picture of my Christmas envelopes for 2025. This might be my last set of calligraphy Christmas cards because I struggle to write with my pointed nibs now. I think it’s my eyes – they’ve become more long-sighted over the years making my writing position awkward and ineffective. Plus, I can’t see what I’m doing anymore! Not even varifocals help. Ack. And after a session of calligraphy I am grumpier than a fried Orchid on a dusty windowsill – not relaxed, or happy with anything I’ve written. So, I think that’s enough with it.

Hopefully in a couple of hours this post will restore Mr Devine’s blog to normality.

Dinah – My penholders are the cheap ones. I think I might do better with Italic calligraphy as it’s more akin to my natural handwriting. The funny angles with pointed pen calligraphy are not helpful – writing up the page rather than across!
I will make more collages – I know what you mean about needing something to do with your fingers! I might also revert to painting – I used to enjoy that. And of course there is the posh camera to master!! Ack. I am not getting on well with this ageing malarky!

I thought about you last night (nothing untoward) someone on The Yorkshire Auction House was flogging a load of calligraphy stuff, think she got about 50 quid for the lot I couldn’t tell you how much she got for the artwork itself cause the maid wouldn’t stop yakking. Re. Orchid, the biggest killer of supermarket/florist bought orchid is usually caused by not removing the ‘death plug’, that clump of coir that the young orchid was grown in, usually hidden by it’s roots, if its constantly wet it’ll rot. Makes sense, the life expectancy for an orchid is 15 to 20 years, I’ve never had one for that length of time 2-3 years max, supermarkets want this to happen so you go out and replace the one that’s died. If that’s the case then by all means replace it, take it to the serve yourself tills at the supermarket and put it through as loose bananas you should get it for about 75p.

Mitzi – It was probably £50 for the artwork as well. Unless it was produced by a big name. Or by a medieval monk??
I didn’t know about the coir plug! My orchid doesn’t seem to have rotted, probably needs another drenching as it goes – thank you for reminding me!
Ack, I won’t try the banana trick at the check out as I have one of those faces that always gets caught!

Jon – Oh my goodness, I had the worst seasonal humbug in December ever! I’m sure it’s only going to get worse. I don’t know what to do about it, I get grumpier than someone with toothache; an ingrowing toenail, and a bad rash.
      Tips welcome.

It’s Christmas already?! I must have blinked for longer than I thought. Did we have a nice summer? Who won the Garden Photos Event?

Even though the stamps are wrong about all being calm and bright, your calligraphy is still beautiful and the display very pretty!
If reading/craft glasses are no longer any use, what about one of those magnifying glasses on a bendy stand thingy? I had been considering getting one with a ring light for winter use, but haven’t done any arty, crafty things in nearly a year so didn’t bother in the end. Maybe for this coming winter though?

P.S. Thank you for allowing me to see my Sideboard again x

May I remind you, Mr Devine, that the Garden Photos Event IS NOT A COMPETITION!!!!
My poor calligraphy vibe may well be down to lack of practice, as I don’t sit down and get into it like I use to. I am too distracted. But my eyes certainly don’t help. I like to have my nose on the paper or it doesn’t feel right!! Wrong posture, of course!
Yep, the knitwear man has been put away for another year :-)
