Did I Win???

I know that everyone is desperate to know who won ‘The Did I Win Yet?’ competition. It has been tricky picking a winner. I was swamped with entries, plus chairs arrived at my backdoor with quotes written all over them – sadly these had to be disqualified as this is a virtual competition – I now have a three piece suite, a kitchen stool, and some sort of rickety Ikea affair to dispose of. Thank you!

Before I disclose the finalists let me first deal with section 1 of the competition – the quiz.

Q1. Many years ago Ms Scarlet had a dream about Mr Lax. In this dream Mr Lax instructed Ms Scarlet to do what?

The answer is: b) Mind the gap. [Well done Rimpy!]

Q2. What does LX mean?

To be fair I have no idea. So any answer is a winner! Yes, trick question, cunning, eh???

And now, [DRUMROLL] the finalists:-

Starting with Melanie, with pertinent quote from George Eliot.
Very neat, Melanie. A gold star for you for composition, cursive, and a festive spirit.

Next up – Mr Devine with an even more pertinent quote…

With this entry you are spoiling me, Mr Devine! I like your style! Very individual.

Next is Rimpy, who actually remembered my dream about Mr Lax! Were you in it too, Rimpy? Were you on the London Underground that evening? Anyhow, this is Rimpy’s creative entry….

Shakespeare! And there’s a nice cursive beneath that rush job – take your time Rimps!

Finally, and with much fanfare, I bring you Mistress Maddie with plenty of glamour and some lively curlicues…. nice chair…

Of course they are all winners for simply entering the competition, and if they would like to leave their addresses at reception, then they will all receive something jolly through their letter boxes in the very near future. Obviously, I do have to pick an overall winner for this competition to continue, so… hmmm…I think it should be…. well…. who do you think it should be?

To be fair, Mr Devine does run a mean competition. He isn’t a shambles like wot I am – he likes the responsibility – and he has a nice set of nibbles – I could be swayed by this…

You’re not a shambles, Ms Scarlet – if anything, you are too nice and see everyone as a winner (because they are). However, competitions have rules and guidelines, and other such stuff, so use these to help you decide on the winner. For example, who was the only person to get the Quiz bit right? Does that outweigh neatness or a lipstick smacker (in a frame, no less)??

No, really. Does it? I can’t decide!

        P.S. I have et all the nibbles….

Mistress Maddie included the rubber gloves. I am just saying, and I can hear the snap as she removed them from her hands…. but I suppose the rubber gloves weren’t a competition stipulation.
I dislike rules, Mr Devine, as well you know!

They both are (oh, dear, this is getting to be as bad as Ms Scarlet choosing a winner…).
Technically, DeVice is correct. Although, I have taken to Device lately as it’s less poncey. But Ms Scarlet has dubbed me Mr Devine for years – which is acceptable here at Wonky Words, or elsewhere (and I consider it a great honour that Ms S sees fit to bestow a name of her choosing upon me. Besides, it’s MUCH better than The Very MIstress bringing out that ‘wand’ photo every now and then…)

Good evening, Dinah! I have totally lost control of this comment box. I think I need some Ibuprofen and a lie down in a darkened room.

I think Mr Devine for his wonderful dodgy English and the lovely flourishes on his y’s, g’s and s’s. The three piece suite will be handy when you’re exhausted from making a decision and have to have a little lie-down.

I am going to make your decision 25% easier, Ms Scarlet, by saying something that I should have said when I sent you my entry: Just as with the FGES Caption Competition, please accept my entry as a comment rather than a caption (as I have already hosted the “Did I Win Yet? Award/Quiz/Competition/Event thingy”).

I don’t think I can help with the remaining 75%, though: I’m rather taken with Melanie’s choice of quote, and I’m intrigued as to what her chair looks like (I love that fabric!). Rimpy’s ambitious quote is also fascinating, and he did get the Quiz bit right. And Mistress Maddie’s quote is fun, plus it is framed, on a posh chair, *and* is accessorised beautifully with Pam Demic’s gloves! Hmmm…

To me it’s obvious that Rimpy should be declared the winner! Having correctly answered the questions and provided a picture per instructions. The rest of us chose to get creative with paper and frame, but that was of our own free choice. I also see nothing wrong with a good ol’ Shakespeare quote! This one is less common to me, which I appreciate that.

Fun fact: Shakespeare was writing all his many plays before dictionaries were created! Can you imagine that!?!?! Not having dictionaries to reference? I can’t fathom what kind of writer I would be without them! As a kid it was one of my favorite books to read!

Melanie – You have a point about the uncommon quote. I shall ponder some more. I like an uncommon quote. But for now I need that darkened room, and possibly some pillow mist. And a hot water bottle.

Could I hire this lawyer I’ve heard of named Rudy, to investigate for any fraud in this contest? While I think Rudy should be drown in a tub of his own hair coloring, I imagine he would love to leave the country right now. The wild conspiracy mobs could turn on him in an instant.
Sorry I’m still having trouble getting all the crazy troubles out of my head.

Your contestants are all winners. No need for a selection of one over the the other. Just award them all British titles. I have the impression that the British have an abundance of titles just waiting for good use.

I understand, Bill, and Rudy – my goodness, how the hell???? I’ve seen footage of him in the Sacha Baron-Cohen film, and in Charlie Brooker’s excellent film, Death to 2020, and I just don’t understand why these nutters were given so much power and influence. I hope the US finds stability this year.
British titles? I shall ponder this suggestion.

I wouldn’t want to be in your shoes dear. They were all entertaining to see. And a struggle I surmise for most of us. I was almost embarrassed to sent mine in to the likes of your talents. Thanks goodness my handwriting looks nothing like what i sent in. Now i think my favorite is Mr Device…..but I’m easily bribed with the color gold and Ferrero Rocher. I am grossly behind in blogging since getting get.

Since all have won, deservedly, and all must have prizes, I trust you have a box of comfits about your person. You, of course, will have the thimble.

I don’t think I can do handwriting any more. To think that I used to have a permanent callous on my index finger because I did it so much!

Z – If only I could nibble on a comfit! My jaw is still not capable on anything harder than a well steamed carrot.
I am revving up calligraphy and collage production, remember those Loopy Letters that people signed up to several decades ago? Well, you never know I might be able to make good my intentions this year! Cross fingers.
      Yes, I have those callouses!

I didn’t win, but Joe Biden did, so I’m happy about that! Of course, if I had entered all of what I said, except for President Biden, would actually mean something, but there you go! xoxo
