Deadline

Before I rant and rave about the deadline, let me first rant and rave about WordPress. It is subtle, I know, but when I looked at my blog this morning the template had changed! I didn’t do it! Maybe Charmaine has been on the fiddle and tinkered with something under the bonnet? Rest assured that I am enfumed. YES, ENFUMED.

Meanwhile, the reason for this post – other than I haven’t written one for a week – is that I have only received TWO entries for the DID I WIN YET competition. Seriously, I wasn’t expecting such enthusiasm, it’s not like there is anything else going on in the world. The deadline for entries is Sunday 10th January, or thereabouts, I can be flexible. Please send your entries to me via my email address that is somewhere obvious on this blog/website. DO NOT MAKE ME THREATEN YOU WITH A FLOCK OF STARLINGS, or my appalling taste in music. I will announce the winner/s on Sunday 17th January.

And furthermore…. I have a meme for you from the olden days of 2008. What was the first vinyl single you ever bought? Slap it on your blog and tell us about it.

This was mine:-

Jon, I was just about to repeat myself regarding my Chitty Chitty Bang Bang album, which replaced the Pinky and Perky album when my Dad tired of all the squeaking. I was heartbroken.

Mistress B – It almost was, wasn’t it?! I just need to find 3 old men to tether in the field. And I wonder why I’m being blackmailed.

Mistress B – Noooooooo!! I haven’t had your entry!!! Please resend!! Oh my goodness, there are probably thousands of entries floating about somewhere that haven’t found my in tray. I have checked my spam, and all I had in there was a note from a spammer trying to blackmail me. I will issue a receipt for all entries.

Ah starlings another of those things in the U.S. where people say; “Which White European Colonialist brought those damn things over!” You can find them in bulk at the warehouse stores, but nobody wants them. Personally, I curse the people who brought over Creeping Buttercup (Ranunculus repens) and Cherry Laurels (Prunus laurocerasus) to these shores! They don’t play well with other plants, they have their own manifest destiny towards expansionism and are the bane of my restoration efforts.

I will trot over like a coyote (brisk trotters that they are) and see what this contest thingy is all about.

Melanie – I do like watching the starlings, the flocks get bigger than this and they are mesmerising, BUT, they are so greedy. Fine when they are eating grubs in the field, not so fine when they are stealing the animal feed.
Creeping buttercup – yes, I have that too, takes over everything that the Ground Elder, stinging nettles, and brambles haven’t!

Crikey, you must be enfumed – going round threatening people with murmurations. Perhaps I should remind myself about your competition because we have enough of the ravenous little wossnames as it is.
First single? Might have been “Greased Lightning”, actually! Oh, mind you there was Woody Woodpecker on red shellac – that’ll have been it. 🙂

Batarde – I had Tubby the Tuba on a 78, but I didn’t buy that one so it doesn’t count! Greased Lightning, now there’s a revelation!
I will await your entry, but remember the starlings will be launched on Sunday, and they will also be enfumed.

Charming … this is the thanks I get for taking in the delinquent niece and feeding her up, is it? Have a care, cousin dear – I have parakeets and am prepared to use them.

And this was the 1950s and the kids who sniggered at a possibly rude meaning of lyrics became the very ones who had conniptions at their own daughters flinging undies onto the stage when Tom Jones was the rage. Plus ca change…

Dinah – It’s a funny old change isn’t it? I check myself when I find myself frowning at a young person, when actually they’re not doing anything worse than I would have done. Doing my best not to turn into a judgemental middle aged person.

Ah, yes – the “handover” of generations. I found myself starting to tut about the “behaviour of young people” after about the age of 45, and have had to inwardly and virtually kick myself when I feel judgemental over what I see as “their” misdemeanours, when I look back at the way I used to think when I was their age… Jx

I have done it! I have done it! Don’t send your starling minions to harrass me!
The quote-on-a-chair *and* the music meme. Although the music meme brought up another quote that i might have a go at. But probably not…

Incidentally, is that your phone (or a knuckle) clonking the window at about the 10 second mark?

Mr Devine – Do not worry! You are safe from the flock of starlings, and apologies for the musical taste. I think it might have been my knuckle as I was getting bored waiting for the birds to fly so I tapped on the window 🙂

Obviously Mr Device, you’re too young to realise that The White Horses was one of those dubbed foreign-language black-and-white series [see also: Belle and Sebastian; Robinson Crusoe] the Beeb used to dig out and serve to us unsuspecting kiddie-winkies on a Saturday morning. This was before colour telly was widespread, and long before children suddenly seemed to want lots of shoutiness in order to be entertained. Jx

Oh. Yes. Perhaps just a tad too young, then. I did think it was a bit weird for a music video…

        P. S. I know it’s not quite the same (being in colour for a start) but I remember watching the English dubbed 1978 Swiss/German version of Heidi when it was shown on the Beeb.

I’ll have to think of a quote…then see if we have any chairs left! I’ll probably miss the deadline. Well, we’re awfully busy sweeping up water. Thunderstorms, you see…Oh, never mind

So is that your house in the background on the video?

As for my first vinyl single, it was probably something by Cliff Richard (yes, believe it or not, I was a Cliff enthusiast before my musical tastes moved on). I used to play my new singles over and over, driving the rest of the family bonkers.

Maybe the competition is too sophisticated for us humble bloggers? Or maybe we’re just bone idle? Or maybe we’re too busy watching cat videos?

Thinking about the music of youth is certainly a nice distraction from all the worrisome news over here this past week. Lesley Gore’s California Nights was a big favorite for me. Since I lived in the Midwest walking on a California beach was a fantasy. I didn’t make it to California until the 1980’s. I also got hooked on the British Invasion groups.

Oh wow! I’ve never thought about displaying mine – other than I think I might have put some of it in one of my weird bottles.

They are on my WordPress app, Savvy, but I can’t see them here either. I will have to write a post about missing comments…. I reckon Mr Lax is haunting my blog!
