Too Much News…

So many new BBC newsreaders popping up on my TV screen! Looks like everyone it going to get their chance to read the autocue during the coming months.

Meanwhile, I have decided to cease experiments on Charmaine, for the time being. She has instructed me to use my time constructively and instead of watching the 24hr rolling news channel I could instead clean the bath; read my pile of books; do some calligraphy; have a good clear out; blog more; shave my armpits; write a book; write a short story; and WASH MY HANDS. She has a point – especially regarding the bath and my armpits.

I feel a bit discombobulated. I imagine we are all feeling much the same. The UK are only testing for Coronavirus in hospitals, which I guess will skewer the death rate – making it look worse than it is. Also, surely we need to know who has developed immunity so that they can help others without fear of passing on a nasty bug? For example, if I knew I was immune I would be willing to help out in the local care home, or stack shelves in the supermarket, or read the news. I am just saying.

Shall we have a tune?

Mistress B – I never go to the supermarket – I have everything delivered, I loathe food shopping, so I am dreading having to go to the shops should the deliveries stop. I do have enough to keep me going for a couple of weeks. I am stocked up on whisky, so I shall be fine.

There are probably still “Four thousand holes in Blackburn, Lancashire”.

It’s all getting a bit over-dramatic, isn’t it? The latest report I heard is that the government is telling all over-70s to stay indoors “for their own safety” [sic]. And what are the authorities going to do with all those old people who refuse? Shoot them? Do people of sixty-nine-and-a-half have to carry ID? It’s all too confusing. Jx

PS I washed my hands before I typed, so you’re safe.

Jon – Sky News is the worst! It’s like watching a horror film! I could only watch it for ten minutes as it was so over the top.
I know! There can be a huge variance in health and agility in the older generation, and some will still need ongoing care for non-coronavirus issues. I am really worried about this.
I read that the army were going to be brought in to protect supermarkets and hospitals.
      Roll on August.

Far too much stuff of all sorts at the moment … I am toying with the idea of pre-emptive self-isolation. Raise the drawbridge and get Fortnums to deliver in the old fashioned way, by trebuchet.

Batarde – What a splendid idea! I had quite forgotten the Fortnums hamper! I used to get one for Christmas from where I worked. I’m not saying how I got one, ahem.

I don’t want to read or watch any news from now until Christmas (and even that might be too soon) as it’s all so over-the-top and scaremongering. I’m going to try and live in blissful oblivion for as long as I can.

You have a good point about testing for immunity (or even if one has already had it and got over it without realising) as I’ve been thinking about what I could do to help out if/when our office inevitably shuts and sends us all home for weeks (with pay, fortunately).

Oh, and I didn’t know Charmaine was so sensible?!

Mr Devine – Honestly, I was trying to find a film to watch on Netflix last night, and I thought bugger it I may as well watch the news as it’s playing out like a disaster movie.
I will do my bit if I can, but I still have a runny nose! I have had that ‘cold coming on feeling’ since 9th February! I’m beginning to think I have an allergy to the anti-bac. Or vinegar. Or cleanliness in general.
    Take care, m’dear.

If you haven’t already watched them (or don’t like animation), I can highly recommend the Studio Ghibly films that are on Netflix at the mo. To escape from it all, so far I’ve watched (amongst others) “Kiki’s Delivery Service” (about a young witch who moves to a big town and tries to find her place there), “My Neighbour Totoro” (a delightful fantasy about two young sisters’ interactions with strange creatures when they move to the country), “Castle in the Sky” (about a castle – well, city really – in the sky, funnily enough), and “Spirited Away” (a bit nightmare-inducing actually, but still rather wonderful).
However, last night I watched “The Quiet Place” – that was not delightful at all. It was very good, but very harrowing (Emily Blunt was amazing as always, as was John Krasinski – and super hot!!). I wouldn’t recommend in the current climate…
Take care of yourself, too x

Thank you for the recommendations, Mr Devine, they are always needed. My viewing habits can get a bit dystopian, so something different is needed. I am trying Belgravia on ITV at the moment… I am not sure about it yet.

Dinah – Blimey, yes it was. As a teenager I was terrified. How are you now? I read that shingles feels like hot pokers being shoved into you. I don’t fancy it.

I suspect the NHS is desperately short of testing kits, which is why testing is being drastically restricted and we’re not getting a true picture of the virus’s development.

The media scare-mongering is relentless. They give us the latest horrifying forecasts of how many will get the virus, but as a percentage of the UK population it’s still tiny and the vast majority of us won’t catch it.

My goodness, Charmaine is getting a bit bossy. Perhaps it’s time to lock her in the attic again.

Oh! The scaremongering… It may be a seriously catchy bug, but my heavens, how the meejah and the gossip-mongers are making a meal of it! I and my whole team have been instructed to work at home from now on (no end date, needless to say), but what niggles me is if everyone is isolated at home yet the virus is still out there, what happens when we are all suddenly let loose again and come in contact with the outside world? It’s such a bizarre situation. Jx

Jon – I guess they are hoping it will burn itself out? And that the healthiest will have developed immunity that will prevent the disease spreading to the less healthy… or summink like that 🙂

We are in a situation where no rules exist. In other words, nobody actually knows whether we’re better off mingling, developing immunity and moving on, or isolating and not knowing where that leads. The blind leading the blind, methinks. Jx

Jon – I think it’s all about staggering the rate of infection so that the NHS isn’t overloaded to the point of collapse as the health system in Italy seems to be. I think they say that 80% of us will get it. Those with underlying health problems must be protected. They also reckon that there are probably 50,000 untested cases in the UK already, and these cases have been unsymtomatic. Crikey, I’ve been so buggy lately I’m wondering if I’ve already had it!! ( wishful thinking)

Nick – I think it’s about helping the NHS, and preventing deaths being caused indirectly by the virus. For example all the intensive care beds might be taken up by virus patients and you might collapse with something unrelated, such as a heart attack – the NHS may not be able to care for you because they are overstretched by virus patients.
      Stay safe, m’dear.
